Hans Axel von Fersen is a Swedish count who falls in love with the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette.

Appearance[]

Hans is a handsome young man with long, dark blond hair he keeps tied back. As a Swedish count, Hans dresses in fine clothing.

Personality[]

Hans is shown to be a noble and loyal person. Even though he fell in love with Marie Antoinette after she married Louis XVI, he did not compromise the sacred bond of their marriage and later tried to save the entire family after they were imprisoned. However, once most of the family met their end, Hans is later said to have become dictator of his home country because he could not handle the loss of Marie Antoinette.

Plot[]

At age eighteen, Fersen had traveled to France for his studies. He had been attending a masquerade ball when he first met Marie Antoinette. Before he knew who she was, Fersen had fallen for her. When Oscar came between them, Fersen learned who she was and introduced himself as a noble from Sweden. Afterwards, he would begin making several visits to the palace in order to see Marie Antoinette.

Sometime after realizing that his affair with Marie Antoinette was causing her reputation to be ruined in the Courts he joins the army to help fight in America. At this point, Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes has fallen in love with him but does not convey it to him.

Years later, he returns safe and sound. The love situation between Oscar and him is resolved as Oscar realizes she loved André Grenadier for years and became lovers during Fersen's absence. Fersen spends his days in Versailles aiding the Royal Family and keeping his love hidden.

After The Storming of Bastille, he helps the Royal Family Escape from the palace to escape the attacks of the people. He intended to accompany them all the way, but the King told him to go and escape to safety.

When he finds out they were caught and Marie Antoinette was executed, he was devastated, heartbroken and full of grief rage. When he got back to Sweden, he became a cruel tyrant who hated his people as they reminded him of the people who killed Marie Antoinette, ten years later in his reign, he was slaughtered by his people.

It is evident that the love between him and Marie is still there throughout the series, but they don't act upon it later on in the series.

  • Marie Antoinette: Fersen fell in love with Marie Antoinette before officially knowing who she was. After learning who she is, Fersen began making frequent visits to Versailles in order to visit her. While they never did anything that compromised her marriage, Fersen began to see the damage being done caused by rumors. Eventually, he saw how Marie Antoinette was ignoring her duties as queen and had pleaded for her to return to her position and help her people with the promise of never leaving her side again if she did. When the royal family began to lose power and were imprisoned, Fersen attempted to help them escape but they were stopped.

  • Axel von Fersen died in Stockholm as Sweden's highest-ranking official next to the king; his death sent shockwaves throughout the country. The cause of death was determined to be "crushing of the ribcage" when the Swedish-Finn Otto Johan Tandefelt jumped with both feet on Fersen's chest.
